Many people believe "yes, and" is the first and most important rule of improvisation. However, I tend to appreciate "got your back" even more. Before any performance, each member of an improv team pats every other member on the back while repeating "got your back". The idea is simple. In improv, we have no idea what is going to happen or where the show will take us. But "got your back" is our commitment to each other that no matter what happens, we will be there for one another and do our best to make sure people have what they need when they need it.
Honestly, "got your back" should be a regular part of each and every day with our friends, family, and colleagues.
Shirts with the "got your back" logo are sold through my Bonfire Store to raise money for a rotating list of non-profits, such as the Ehlers-Danlos Society, The Trevor Project, Trans Lifeline, and Improv Utopia. Purchase a shirt and help an important cause today! You can also check out the got your back Instagram page for upcoming events in the Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina area.
